FRANKLIN COUNTY MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB

Kids ages 9 to 13 who are interested in mountain biking should consider participating in this free club. Kids younger than 9 will be allowed with parental participation.  Practice is held Saturday mornings, April 1st through May 20th, at Waid Park, 9:30 am to 11:30 am.  This non-competitive club is all about fun. Bike handling techniques and safety considerations will be the primary focus. This club is intended for beginner to intermediate riders. A limited supply of mountain bikes are available for use thanks to Virginia Outdoors Foundation grant (Trek Marlin 7's).  Contact Parks and Recreation at 540-483-9293 if interested. FRANKLIN COUNTY YOUTH TRAIL RUNNERS

Building healthy habits through fun group accountability.  Youth ages 8-13 years old and their family members are encouraged to participate in weekly trail runs at Waid Park every Wednesday, March 15 - April 26.  Not sure if trail running is for you?  This is a great place to start.  Registration is required for this free non-competitive program.

GOOD TIMES SHORT TRACK MTB RACE AT WAID

There is no better way to bring the legs and lungs out of hibernation than a Good Times Short Track Race that will be held on Sunday, March 26th at 1:00 pm. Combining Waid Park’s toughest climb and fastest descent, this 2.3 mile loop will not disappoint.  Register at: www.bikereg.com/good-times-short-track-at-waid. There will be prizes and a cash payout.

KIDS FISHING DAY AT WOODY LAKE

Calling all kids ages 15 and under. Back again by popular demand is the DGIF youth-only stocked trout pond and fishing competition at the Recreation Park. Pack a lunch, grab your tackle box and fishing rod and see if you can win the trophy for the largest or smallest fish of the day. Ages 16 and older cannot assist with catching a fish, setting the hook and/or retrieving the fish per DGIF regulations. Saturday, April 15 at Recreation Park, Woody Lake from 10:00 am to noon.  15 & under. FREE!  Youth-only stocked trout program runs April 1st to June 1st. We’ll see you at the Lake!  

MARCH THROUGH THE WOODS HIKING SERIES

In this 5 week hiking series you will have the opportunity to hike 5 different trail systems. All hikes are considered moderately difficult. Hike distance and pace will reflect the ability of the group. Transportation is provided and leaves the Essig Recreation Center at 10am. Pack a lunch/snack and expect to arrive back at Essig around 2pm. Pre-registration is required. $35.00

YOUTH CROSS COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE

The Franklin County Mountain Bike Club will host their second free youth bike race on May 27th at 9:30am at Waid Park. This free event is open to all youth ages 8-15. This timed race will have a start/finish gate, and the course will be fully marked. Finisher prizes will be issued to all participants in this non-competitive race.
